How To Test Motion Sensors
Your motion sensor is battery-powered and designed to conserve battery life. When motion is detected, the sensor sends a signal to the panel and then enters a 3-minute sleep mode.
Because of this sleep mode, the sensor will not detect additional motion during that time. This behavior is normal and does not indicate a malfunction. For best results, always wait at least three minutes between tests.
Testing Motion Detection
Verify Sensor Communication
If you want to confirm the sensor is communicating with the panel:
- Press the tamper button on the right side of the motion sensor.
- The panel will announce the sensor name followed by “tampered.”
This confirms the sensor is signaling properly.
Quick Motion Test Using the Panel
Using the panel’s LED indicators is the easiest way to test motion detection.
- Make sure the system is disarmed.
- Do not walk in front of the motion sensor for 3 minutes.
- Walk in front of the motion sensor.
- Watch for the Home button to flash yellow on the panel.
Each yellow flash indicates the sensor has detected motion. This method also helps you evaluate the sensor’s detection range.
Alternate Test: Away Mode
You can also test the motion sensor by triggering an alarm in Away mode.
Important: Call Customer Support before testing to place your system in Test Mode so emergency services are not dispatched.
Steps
- Arm the system in Away mode.
- If you arm using the panel, open and close an exterior door during the 60-second exit delay.
- If you do not, the system will default to Stay mode, which disables motion sensors.
- This step is not required when arming from a key remote or the mobile app.
- Do not walk in front of the motion sensor for 3 minutes.
- Walk in front of the motion sensor to trigger the alarm.
- Disarm the system.
After testing, be prepared to answer any incoming calls, as the Monitoring Station may attempt to contact you.
